Description of the workshop
Attention is fundamental to vision. It was probably the first visual attribute to evolve in nature and led to the Cambrian Explosion. Today models of attention are increasingly being called upon to solve problems that have challenged vision researchers for many years. Aspects of visual attention seem central in problems ranging from control of robot systems to advertising, surveillance, visual inspection, image and video compression, object tracking, and object recognition. Such systems can generate enormous quantities of data which have to be processed in an intelligent and selective manner in order to extract what is relevant and important. However, often we cannot precisely characterise in advance what is going to be interesting or anomalous. Attention must recognise surprises! Cognitive psychology is discovering new behaviours and attention models all the time and provides much of the insight behind new developments in this field.
This workshop will be an interdisciplinary forum to present and communicate computational models of visual attention and their applications. It is recommended to make it a regular part of ICVS.
